Orthopedic Department of Peking University Third Hospital was founded in 1958 when was a time of new upsurge of socialist construction. With 50 years of development, the Chinese Nation has been able backbone and China's Public Health has a significant progress. Under this circumstance, Orthopedic Department of Peking University Third Hospital has developed as a National Key Department for the Orthopedic Academic and Scientific Research.
With the development of the department scale, research field, the enquires for further classification of department function, work efficiency improvement of clinical professionals and better paramedical services came into a problem. Based on these needs, the Secretary Group gave birth and started operations. As the head of the Secretary Group Ms. WU Yunxia together with 6 other secretaries undertook the paramedical services responsibilities within six divisions: Spine Group, Cranial Vertebral Group, Cervical Group, Lumbar Group, Implant Group and Trauma Group of the Orthopedic Department.
Orthopedic Department now has nearly 200 beds, more than 30 Orthopedic Professors who are well-known and have a few social positions mostly, which made the work of Secretary Group’s various. In the past 4 years, the Secretary Group has achieved a great number of works by continuously experience studies.
First of all, Clinical Orthopedic Cases Collection & Classification could be one of the key responsibilities for Secretary Group, which will go through all the inpatients’ health care process including Pre-Operation, Operation-Ongoing and After-Operation. Moreover, Secretary Group also does Traceability System Creation, such as medical documents and medical image data collections for clinical review, patients contact info formation etc. Since 2004, the Secretary Group has collected more than 15,000 cases of various orthopaedic diseases and reviewed more than 16,000 historical cases from 1994 to 2004.
Apart from daily department administrative affairs, medical-related works such as data collection & classification, outpatient investigation for academic and research purposes, outpatient investigation within 6 divisions and co-work with postgraduate research, Secretary Group joins in several international research projects as well, such as "Lambar Disc Epidemiological Studies".
Secretary Group standardized data system and information management flow in order to ensure the data is complete and trustful.
March 2005, Secretary Group achieved the 1st edition of orthopedic Electronic Case.
November 2007, Secretary Group achieved the 2nd edition of the Orthopedic Electronic Case. As well as co-compiled 7 translated- books under dept.’s leading. At the moment, it involves in data collections & classifications and image production for 3 monographs.
In 2006, Secretary Group won the first prize in BeiYiSanYuan Web Contest
In 2007, Secretary Group participated in the “innovation team" work issued by Ministry of Education, and applied for several research funds.
In 2008, Secretary Group assist-planed and co-operated celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the orthopedics department, such as: new department-culturel-promotion walls production in orthopedic surgery building, eyes-attracted orthopedic dept. website (2008 Rev.), press conference for Orthopaedic Dept. rewarded “Innovation Team” and its 50th anniversary, Co-wrote anniversary brochure of Orthopaedic Dept., anniversary celebrations and international academic forums etc.
As a new career in China, Medical Secretary could be a new consideration. How to manage it well shall be a long-term topic for us.
Firstly, the Medical Secretary shall be good assistants for medical experts and professors. Secondly, Medical Secretaries are not only ‘housekeepers’ but also good communications between medical professionals and the public. Secretary Group highlights human resources quality, new thoughts on medical secretary work. Based on n eeds, Secretary Group organized several medical trainings, such as medical anatomy, orthopaedic basic knowledge and basic English, applied office software, computer graphic design, professional camera, time management, etiquette, the Secretary broad expertise, culture and art of communications etc. It also arranged several times of discussions meeting with secretaries from other hospitals, by sharing knowledge from each other, it provided efficient support for dept’s medicine, education, research.
What is more, work under the guidance orthopaedic leaders, the Secretary Group launched academic meetings over 10 times by associating China Association of Science Branch of the Chinese Medical Association spinal bone branch of science group, the China Rehabilitation Medical Association cervical spondylosis professional success Committee. It rewarded high praises from those organizations due to its professional attitudes.

May 2004, Prof. DANG Gengting & Prof. CHNE Zhongqiang held the 7th National Orthopaedic Conference of Orthopaedic Branch of Chinese Medical Association
October 2004, Prof. LOU Siquan & Dr. SUN Yu held 8th National Conference of Cervical Spondylosis of Spinal Committee of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medicine Association
June 2005, Prof. LIU ZHongjun organized spinal surgery study classes of Peking University Third Hospital orthopedic dept.
June 2005,Prof. DANG Gengting & Dr. LIU Zhongjun held 20th establishment anniversary of spinal surgery branch of the Chinese Medical Association
June 2006, President CHEN Zhongqiang lead and held the "the thoracic spinal canal stenosis Symposium." together with Ningxia Medical College Hospital, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, the Fourth Military Medical University Xijing Hospital
March 2007, Dr. LIU Zhongjun held senior lectures for AOspine cervical artificial disc.
May 2007, Prof. LOU Siquan & Dr. Sun Yu held 1st elections session of excellent papers by young and mid-aged medical professionals on cervical rehabilitation medicine of Spinal Committee of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medicine Association
June 2007, President CHEN Zhongqiang lead and held AOspine thoracolumbar senior lecture.
June 2007, our Dept. held the National Conference on cervical spine surgery with Second Affiliated Hospital of Shanxi Medical University,
July 2007, Prof. DANG Gengting & Dr. LIU Zhongjun, held the 1st conference and establishment of orthopaedic Surgeons Branch of the Chinese Medical Professionals Association

When orthopedic department founded, the Secretary Group was not existed. But now, we are proud of being devoted to the glorious medical work in China.
Looking for the future, by inheriting the older generation’s efforts and care of orthopedics professionals, the Secretary Group is getting stronger. We will aim for the “department-oriented” and better our services. We believe orthopedics department of Peking University Third Hospital will have a bright future.
