The General Spine Group is well equipped with expertise in spinal surgery. It has 4 professors, 3 of whom are Ph D supervisors, 2 associate professors and 1 attending doctor. Ever since it was established during the 90s, the group had treated a variety of spinal disorders featuring spinal tumors, deformities, spondylotic diseases and infectious spinal disorders. The group is a leading group not only domestically for the treatment of spinal disorders in general, but internationally for its treatment of spinal tumors in particular, as well as the multiple technical invents it has made.
Our department started to explore surgical treatment of spinal tumor since the 1960s. Our early experience of success in treating spinal tumors was gained in 1972 when we successfully used radical resection for the treatment of severe lumbar giant cell tumor. Ever since our group was set up in the 90s, improvement in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal tumors has always been one of our major points of interest. Our study has been fruitful as it progresses in depth. By now, we have treated over 900 cases of primary and metastatic spinal tumor, the scale of our research and the effect of the treatments has attracted attention world wide. Among them, total vertebrectomy of the cervical, thoracic and lumbosacral spine, the CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy for spinal tumors and the CT-guided percutaneous implantation of 125I seed in metastatic spinal tumors and related research on spinal tumors has reached world first-class level. Meanwhile, we have also made a significant improvement in treating and in studying the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine deformity, and spine trauma.
To date, the General Spine Group has been granted for nearly 10 million RMB by The Ministry of Health, The Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Peking University in support of its research programs. These included studies of improvement in surgical treatment of spinal tumors, the use of minimally invasive techniques in the spine, the use of stem cells in the treatment of spinal cord injury, and the local gene therapy in spinal fracture. All members of staff from our group have the experience of studying in the U.S and/or the Europe. They won awards in a few academic conferences and forums. Their have publications in domestic as well as international scientific peer-reviewed journals.
