Group of Joint Surgery was established in 1991 and has quickly grown up to be one of the best Joint centers in China. As early as in 1960’s, joint arthroplasty was already started in our department, such as first generation of hip resurfacing, humeral head replacement made from PMMA etc.
　　In 1972, we started semi-hip replacement using Moore prosthesis, and domestic PCA implant was utilized in 1980. Furthermore, the first case of total knee replacement was performed in 1985 and the prosthesis was provided by Deputy. As one of the best orthopaedic center in China, arthroscopy was introduced into clinical diagnosis and treatment for knee patient in 1980s.
　　Since the Joint Group was getting independent in 1992, joint surgeons took specialized training of joint replacement in abroad like USA, UK Japan and etc. Due to the outstanding leadership of the Chairman and the efforts of all the joint surgeons, the Joint Group rapidly becomes one of the best joint centers in our country, especially in the area of total knee replacement, total hip replacement and arthroscopy. With the improvement of prosthesis design and surgical technique, different types of implants have been used in our group, like fixed bearing knee, mobile bearing knee, rotate-hinged knee, LCCK and so on. Besides of the traditional cemented and uncemented total hip replacement, ceramic on ceramic and metal on metal total hip replacement also have been done for several years. In addition, more and more complicated cases such as revision total hip and revision total knee were completed successfully. Bilateral hip and knee replacement and MIS knee replacement are also performed routinely now. As the pioneer in joint field, we started the history of femoral-patella replacement and unicompartmental replacement in China. In the aspects of ligments repair, we started arthroscopic ACL reconstruction using bone-tendon-bone graft as early as in 1985. So far, more than 1500 cases of total hip arthroplasty, more than 1000 cases of total knee replacement and hundreds of patients of arthroscopic ACL reconstruction have been accomplished by our joint surgeons. Meanwhile, other surgeries like high tibial osteotomy, shoulder and ankle arthroscopy etc. are also routinely performed here.
Beyond the great clinical achievements, our staff also put much effort in scientific research. Among all the projects we did and we are doing, we focus on the mechanism of osteoarthritis and cartilage repair. 2 projects were sponsored by Chinese Nature Science Foundation, and another 2 were sponsored by National Science Department “211” Foundation and National Educational Department Foundation. Through continuous study more than 10 years, our work has been widely recognized nationally and awarded by Chinese Medical Association. Up to now, more than 50 papers have been published in peer-review journals, and book named “Joint surgery” was published and “osteoarthritis” was translated into Chinese version by our senior staff surgeons.
　　We also highlight educational responsibility. There are totally 12 PhD students, 11 Master degree students and 1 post-doctoral fellowship completed their study under the guidance of our professors. Another 2 PhD students and 3 master degree students are currently pursuing their degree in the direction of cartilage repair and gene therapy. In addition, continuous education is anther one important issue of our group. We take the responsibility to accept fellows all over the country and hold scientific conference, symposiums and course annually.
　　In order to keep the pioneer position in China and make it to be a well-known joint center in the world, much attention has been paid to international academic communication. All the senior staff was trained more than 1 year in US, European countries and Japan and Korea. Some world famous joint surgeons were invited to be visiting professors of our hospital, and also some foreign exchange fellows come to our department every year. For further improvement, we started the international cooperation with Nijmegen University Hospital of the Netherland in 2004, and benefited from that, has been the leaders in revision total hip by using bone impaction grafting technique.
All the staff in our Joint Group includes two professors, three associate professors and three attending surgeons.
