Caring of orthopedic trauma patients has always been a part of orthopedic service provided to the patients in the orthopedic department since the establishment of Peking University Third Hospital in 1958. We have been providing excellent care for spine trauma patients since 1960s as one of the best spine center in China. We are also among those pioneers who use minimum invasive technique (locking intramedullary nail) to treat long bone fractures in the early 90s last century in China. As the fast development of management of orthopedic trauma world wide, the need of caring, training and education in orthopedic trauma increasing rapidly in the department from patients, medical students, residents and visiting fellows from other hospitals. To meet those requirements, also for the better development for the department, Orthopedic Trauma Division was established in 1999, proposed by Professor Geng-Ting Dang, former president of Chinese Orthopedic Association and head of the department. The mission of Orthopedic Trauma Division is to continuously provide excellent care for spine trauma patients and optimal treatment to extremities trauma patients, give the best opportunity to students and residents for training.
After establishment of Orthopedic Trauma Division, clinic patient visits have increased to nearly 25,000 annually. By using the most updated modern surgical technique, more than 4,000 patients with trauma and spine disorders were successfully treated in Orthopedic Trauma Division since the establishment of Orthopedic Trauma Division 9 years ago. Surgical results for those complicated fractures such as spine, pelvic, accetabulum, intraarticular fractures and fracture nonunion is excellent among the leading level in China. Recently, minimal invasive surgical technique, the most advanced state of art operative technique has been widely applied to fracture fixation, which has significantly reduced fracture healing time and fracture complication rate, leads our fracture management to a high international level.
Orthopedic Trauma Division is a team with advanced professional skill and knowledge. All doctors in Orthopedic Trauma Division have received doctorate degree in medicine. They all had advanced spine surgery and trauma training experience domestically or abroad. Dr. Fang Zhou is currently the chief of the Orthopedic Trauma Division. He had nearly 4 years working and training experience in U.K. and U.S.A. as an orthopedic surgeon. He was a resisted orthopedic surgeon in U.K. and worked in U.K. as registrar (chief resident). He is a faculty member of AO Spine International and AO Trauma International, a committee member of Chinese Trauma Association, editor of Chinese Journal of Orthopedic Trauma. Other doctors also had training experience abroad (Dr. Ji Hong Quan in Australia, Dr. Tian Yun in USA, Dr. Zhang Zhi Shan in Swissland). Currently there are one clinic professor (Dr. Fang ZHOU), two associated professors (Dr. Ji Hong Quan and Dr. Tian Yun), and one attending (Dr. Zhang Zhi Shan) in the team.
Orthopedic Trauma Division is focusing on the management of spine trauma patients and minimal invasive treatment to fracture patients. The team will treat all kinds of orthopedic trauma, especially fresh and old fracture of cervical, thoracic, lumbar, pelvic, accetabulum, extremities and joint; fracture malunion and nonunion, revision of failed previous internal fixation; and also degenerative spine disorders, including cervical spondylosis, thoracic and lumbar stenosis, lumbar disc herniation, spodylolisthesis etc. |
